Not that what you do for $$$ has anything to do with who you are.
But I'm curious.
I, myself, am in the Art Department. Local 44. Props, Set Dressing, Shopper. I go by the name "Proptart".
Got work?

Hello fellow art dog. I just joined Tribe. I live in Santa Monica and work as a production designer. Mostly Indie films, some commercials and a rare TV show. I came to LA from Arizona where people in the entertainment business couldn't afford to specialize. We all worked in every department, every position. Mostly for no money. And if there was money we had to quit our day jobs to get it. Crazy. LA seems much more compartmental. Specialized. Territorial. But I'm making a lot more money and I don't have a "day" job. Why did you guys get into the business?

          Hi, back atcha!
That all reminds me of my old film school days. I learned to do pretty much everything, but then soert og specailized upon arriving in Hollyweird. Actually, I started out assistant editing, then went into the Camera Department for 5 years, and somehow ended up in the Art Department.
As for why? I have no idea. It seemed like a good idea at the time? The money's good? Actually, I have a love/hate realtionship with my chosen career path. But I've been at it so long, I can't really imagine any other way of life. :)

Hi! I guess I am bit like you too. I started out as a production assistant and learned to do just about everything. I worked on features for a while, did events, and just got into working on independents. Right now, I am costumer apprenticing for Local 784 in San Francisco. Here is the city we work in theater and Film. When I work in film, I work thru Local 16. I also work as an assistant accountant in film and a transportation dispatcher. I've been in Art, Production, you name it. I've been doing it for around 7 years and really don't know how to live any other way.

Will soon be looking for the right production manager and also an A.D for a feature to be shot in SF. Brief resume please.
      • I recently moved from SF back to LA, so I'm very very familiar with crew and cool people up there. I could be up there on a moment's notice, given the right project, which I'm sure yours is! Features such as The Truth About Kerry, NekroBeach, That Game of Chess. Shorts such as The End of Suffering, One Thing, The Tommy Project, Treasure Hunt. Commercial spots for folks like the Mill Valley Film Festival. That's since September. You said keep it short....;-)

All those except for two were shot on film.

Give a call, I'd love to talk about your project. 310-904-8188, or 310-396-0704. Anytime is the best time.

Hope this finds you well! All the best! Juri Koll

I am currently working full time as a cashier for a pet store. Low pay, the job sucks, blah blah blah. Looking for a talent agency in the San Francisco bay area (namely in the 707 area code), as well as a photographer who does decent head shots at a decent price.
Kinda nervous about looking for casting/talent agencies because I don't want to come across some place that looks all fabulous and then wants to charge me an arm and leg for this, that and the other. I don't know any reputable agencies around here. Anyone up this way who knows anything about anything? :)

I am currently in India working VFX on "One Night With The King " I will be here until December. I must say the the way things work here are very different, but more fun and I haven't met a asshole yet who thinks he/she is more important than you/I. (Expept for the folk imported from Hollywood of course)

The kindness of the locals here is helping the crew relax, feel comfortable, and less edgy compared to what I have seen in LA.

I do special effects for movies, ie. sit in front of a computer for ungawdly numbers of hours...except for this summer, when I'm down to a mere 40/week. I don't think I've worked that little for over 8 years! Time to enjoy the free time if I can :)

I should have a credit on Spiderman2 if you want to sit around after the movie for the credits and look for the name of a total stranger...oh boy. I bet my mom doesn't even do that anymore...wait, no she does. That's what moms do.

hey everyone... i'm new to the tribe, i've been an animator for about 10 years now. Currently i'm selling my soul in video game animation. I handle everything from weighting to rigging, keyframming creatures and all aspects of motion capture from the camera tech, shot design, and directing to data monkey and beyond.
however i do try to partake in the sould buy-back program in what little free time i can steal and work on designs, story, characters etc for festival peices (years away), as well as fine art, painting, figure drawing, any creative info i can absorb.
i use to be in the 2D animation realm of cerial commercials, saturday morning cartoons, storyboards, and advertising etc.

animation animation animation... did i mention animaiton?

I too am new to this, but I thought I'd jump in - I'm an actor in Oakland who sucks Satan's pecker during the day so that I can occasionally go audition whenever possible...I was lucky enough to land a voice-over gig doing an animae called "Saikano - or: She, the Ultimate Weapon"...

My "baby" so to say is a rock/funk/jazz fusion group, Black-Eyed Susan. For this group I play the drums and write some songs here and there. It's my brother, my two bestfriends and myself (my pride and joy...check out www.besmusic.com) I also run after school programs for teens in Baltimore when I'm not on tour. Try to keep 'em out of trouble.

Ahhh well, i'm a graduate student specializing in Interactive Storytelling for Immersive Mediated Environments at IU. Though i'm beginning to realize that i prefer writing the traditional linear screenplay for film and television, to all the interactive screenplay bullshit im working on for video games and the web - in grad school.
Thing is i worked for a couple of years in India as a writer in like several places - ad agency, television production house, e-learning company, features section of a national newspaper...so am still figuring what i really want to write for once i finish with grad school.

In the meantime, Marshall placed top three in Project Greenlight with his previous screenplay, and Wes Craven bought it, and interesting things are happening.

I write and create cartoons for Kids TV. I've also made live-action shorts, won a few awards, and write features - one of which is being optioned. I have a fair amount of training as a director and clocked several years in the advanced class of one of L.A.'s more prestigious acting schools. Of course... What I really want to do is direct.

When I was young I worked scooping ice cream. There were six types of chocolate in a row, with no labels visible on the server's side. I got fired after two days.

My wife and I run a multimedia company in Orlando, Florida called J.O.B. Entertainment; we produce music, words and images.

Under that umbrella, I pursue my passions in those three areas and am blessed to actually make money while going about it.

Musically, I write for film, video and theater as well as songwriting and performing with my band Mohave.

Image-wise, I produce short subjects, documentaries and music videos along with shooting still photography. We also do some graphic design.

I've been writing features, reviews and editorials for almost ten years and currently am a columnist for Ink 19 Magazine, Connections Magazine and Orlando City Beat (an online spin-off of the Orlando Sentinel for a younger demographic.)

This is all scaled-back from what used to be on the plate and it's a lot more agreeable when it comes to scheduling. I don't lack focus, I just have a very wide lens, eh?

Do any of you VJ? I'd love to be creating art/visuals for events and if you have any tips/advice on getting into it, i'd love to know. I have the 3d, graphics and video background to be able to do it all myself.

I run a brand new unconventional production company in Australia. Formost I am an agent for many industries and network to get people jobs and employees.
Next year I will be incorporating publishing, executive producion of movies, couture & jewellery release of my business name into Hollywood, promoting a new book soon to be released along with a movie and exclusive annual international masquerade balls.
Plus I am currently creating a project with two other companies to bring Hollywood, Bollywood and independant movies to central West New South Wales. Producers save massive amounts of money back on tax; get more or less an expenses paid working holidays in a rural retreat area and the tourism dollars go to help a community that desperately needs the money for road upgrades, trucked in water and health as well as jobs.

My wife is a financial adviser with American Express Financial Advisors, so if any one, in the San Francisco Bay Area, has any interest in setting up Health or Life insurance, planning for Retirement, planning for a Car/Home/Education or all of the above. Please feel free to call me or my wife, 415-299-9905, 415-320-9321, on our cellular phones.

My job has recently changed with the buy out of the Good Guys from my company, CompUSA. I can now deliver and install anything the Good Guys, CompUSA and some office supply providers have to offer. Which basically means I can take your entire business startup costs, put it under one lease, with one big business discount, and have one party responsible for all of the technology working together. I also work closely with guys at the Guitar Center Pro on Van Ness.

CompUSA, Good Guys, Guitar Center, American Express: these companies are the market monopolies, we introduce the new products and the pricing, so we are often the means of comparison.

Call us and get a quote, then you will know who much it will cost to have your life and business set up the way you want it.

Hey all! I'm a Local 80 Grip here in LA. I do light refinement, mechanical rigging and camera movement for movies, tv, mvs and commercials. I used to do industrials when I lived up in San Francisco, but not so much in unionized LA. (I'm one of about 30-odd girls in my union!)

I'm also a fire performer, aerialist and dancer in my band/performance group called the Mutaytor. I do lighting and rigging for Mutaytor shows, too.

I really love both jobs and it's not bad having to split your time between two things you really enjoy! I'm a lucky girl.

I will be looking for work as a Production Assistant when I move out to L.A. at the end of September. Since I was a child in kindergarten I have been a professional actor/model/dancer (SAG/Equity) until I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle right before my freshman year in high school. After which I got behind the camera as a still photographer & studio photo assistant. Working on being a writer, producer, & director of my own projects. Most recently have worked as a stage manager for live theatre & taught a video production class to grammar school children. :o)

Happy New Year everyone. I still like to say I'm a screenwriter for a living. For the past 6 years I've made money every single year writing. I was a member of the WGA in 2001-2002. In 2005, I optioned a script to a director/producing team that is on the rise. I should be happy, right? Well, unfortunatly, I still am working the same crap odd jobs that I've been doing since I was 16 to get by. I don't want to just get by anymore. I'm getting older...yikes! I feel like this year I need to change gears and start learning other parts of the biz.

I'm an operatically trained singer, songwriter, nylon-string guitarist, artist and fire-dancer. I really enjoy acting too but I think I should focus on music for now. I dream of being involved in Cirque du Soleil someday, as an off-the-hook fire-dancer who sings at the same time, or to compose music for their show.

This week I'm graduating from street performer to recording artist and festivals/bars (if only to record in my own home studio with my own novice production skills.. lol)

I got on with the SAC (Songwriters Association of Canada) this week and I'm all excited. Next week, the copyright of my originals will be protected and a few of them will be accoustastically posted at http://www/myspace.com/intentionalsound !

Well, I finally left L.A. and moved to Portland, so I could afford to actually buy a house someday (which I did, Yay Me!).

I work for an animation studio (LAIKA) and we just released our first feature film to GREAT critical and box office success. "Coraline" is still in theaters, tho you might not be able to see it in 3D anymore.

I am in the Education group, creating systems to help teach new artists, and get them up to speed on our production processes and the apps we use. Half my work is as a web designer, creating internal sites that help enable groups to work more efficiently together, and half of my work is in creating classes and managing an instructional lab.

I dig it, for the most part, but sometimes miss the heady buzz of actual production. On the other hand, I get to leave at somewhat normal hours.

    :-)
